The BM-13 was one of the most famous Soviet multiple rocket launcher systems of the Second World War, widely known by its nickname “Katyusha.”
In some configurations, the launcher was mounted on American-supplied Ford trucks delivered to the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease programme, providing a reliable and mobile platform for the powerful rocket artillery system.
Armed with rails capable of launching 132 mm rockets in rapid succession, the BM-13 could deliver devastating saturation fire against enemy troop concentrations, fortifications, and supply positions.
The Ford truck chassis offered good mobility and allowed the launcher to quickly reposition after firing, helping crews avoid counter-battery fire.
Used extensively by Soviet forces on the Eastern Front, the BM-13 rocket launcher became a symbol of Soviet artillery power.
Its ability to unleash large volumes of rockets in a short time made it a highly effective psychological and battlefield weapon throughout the war.
