The GMC WSQK “Squawk” Van is a distinctive vehicle featured in the fifth and final season of the Netflix series Stranger Things.
Based on a 1970s GMC Vandura (G-Series) van, it serves as a mobile extension of Hawkins’ local radio station WSQK 94.5 FM, known as “The Squawk.”
In the story’s 1987 setting, Hawkins is under military quarantine following catastrophic supernatural events.
The radio station becomes a crucial communications hub for the main characters, allowing them to coordinate movements, broadcast coded messages, and maintain contact across the town during the escalating conflict with forces from the Upside Down.
The van itself is essentially a mobile radio broadcast unit, equipped with period-correct 1980s technology such as mixing consoles, microphones, tape recorders, and a powerful roof-mounted antenna for transmitting FM signals.
These broadcast vehicles were common during the era, allowing radio stations to report live from events or extend their transmission range outside the studio.
In Stranger Things, the Squawk Van becomes a rolling operations centre for the heroes.
Characters like Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley, who host the station’s show “The Squawk,” use it to stay connected with their friends and relay information while the town faces supernatural threats.
The van’s retro styling—complete with bold radio-station graphics and prominent antenna equipment—captures the nostalgic look of 1980s broadcast vehicles.
Its combination of classic American van design and improvised communications gear makes it one of the memorable vehicles introduced in the show’s final season.
