The Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a/U4 was a rare and experimental variant of the world’s first operational jet fighter, developed late in the Second World War as a specialised heavy interceptor.

While the standard Me 262A-1a carried four 30 mm MK 108 cannon, the U4 modification replaced this armament with a single, powerful 50 mm MK 214A cannon designed to engage Allied bombers at long range.

This enormous weapon required significant internal restructuring, including a reinforced nose section and revised ammunition system.

Although the U4 variant retained the Me 262’s twin Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets and excellent high-speed performance, the added weight and recoil of the 50 mm cannon made it challenging to operate.

Only a handful of prototypes were built, and they saw extremely limited operational testing.

Despite its experimental nature, the Me 262A-1a/U4 demonstrates Germany’s attempts to develop dedicated bomber-destroyer aircraft in the closing months of the war.

Its distinctive long-barrel nose and heavy firepower make it one of the most unusual and striking Me 262 variants, highly appealing to historians and modellers alike.
