Of all animals, the dog is the most faithful of man's companions, also from a historical perspective. Originally, this was a kind of domesticated grey wolf, amember of the Canidae family and the Carnivora order. The relationship between man and dog began some 15,000 to 20,000 years ago, when people started to breed digs and domesticate them. Today, there are hundreds of different breeds, and according to some approximations, there are currently around 400 million dogs worldwide. Modern dog breeds are characterised by a wide variety of sizes, appearances, and behaviours, more than any other animal on land.

The anatomy of the dog is similar to the inner structure of a human being, although the construction varies very strongly from breed to breed. The dog has powerful muscles, a pulmonary and circulatory system that is designed both for fast sprinting and endurance, and teeth for catching, holding and tearing food. The skeleton inherited from its ancestors provides it with the ability to run with speed and jump far.

Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not colourblind. They can perceive differences, but certain variations cannot be detected, similar to the red-greenblindness experienced by people. On the other hand, dogs have more than 220 million scent-detecting cells, which is four times as many of these cells as human beings have. This is the source of their powerful sense of smell. Dogs arealso capable of a wider range of audible frequencies than we are.
