The German 88 mm anti-aircraft and anti-tank artillery piece, the 8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37/41, was developed in the 1930s.

It was widely employed by Germany throughout World War II and is one of the most well-known German weapons.

The development of the original type resulted in a wide range of firearms.

The name refers to a group of guns, the first of which was formally designated as the 8.8 cm Flak 18, followed by the improved 8.8 cm Flak 36, and finally the 8.8 cm Flak 37. Flak comes from the German Flugabwehrkanone (also known as Fliegerabwehrkanone) means "aircraft-defense cannon," which was the weapon's initial role.

"Flak" became a generic name for ground anti-aircraft fire in English.

The cannons were dubbed the Acht-acht ("eight-eight") by Germans and the "eighty-eight" by the Allies in casual usage Air defence units were typically equipped with a fire control computer known as a Kommandogerät ("command device") or a portable Würzburg radar, both of which were responsible for the high level of precision against aircraft.

The 8.8 cm Flak could be fired in a restricted anti-tank mode while still on its wheels, and it could be fully deployed in under two and a half minutes, thanks to the adaptable carriage.

Its success as an improvised anti-tank gun led to the development of a tank gun based on it: the 8.8 cm KwK 36, with the "KwK" abbreviation standing for Kampfwagen-Kanone (literally "battle vehicle cannon," or "fighting vehicle cannon"), which was designed to be mounted in a gun turret as the tank's primary armament.

The main armament of the Tiger I heavy tank was this cannon.

In addition to these Krupp designs, Rheinmetall eventually developed the 8.8 cm Flak 41, a more powerful anti-aircraft gun that was only built in small numbers.

Krupp reacted with a new prototype of the long-barreled 8.8 cm gun, which was later developed into the 8.8 cm PaK 43 anti-tank and tank destroyer gun used on the Elefant and Jagdpanther, as well as the turret-mounted 8.8 cm KwK 43 heavy tank gun used on the Tiger II.
