Heinkel He 177 A-5
From the outset, the Heinkel 177 was the Luftwaffe's only four engined bomber. Its construction was revolutionary. Although its maiden flight took place on 19th November 1939, mass production did not commence until the March of 1942. From a production run of 826 aircraft the He 177 A-5, first delivered in February 1943, had more combat potential than any other version. Over the Atlantic the He 177 had to be considered as a serious adversary with its maximum speed of 472 km/h (273 mph), a 6000kg (13230 lbs) maximum bomb-load, as well as the capability to carry Remotely Guided Bombs. The He 177 saw service over the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and England. It was also used in large numbers on the Eastern Front.
