The Ju 88 was the most versatile German combat plane in the 2nd World War. She served as a dive bomber, fighter (night fighter) torpedo bomber and minelayer and for reconnaissance. With the Ju88A-1 series production in September 1939 was started. The first deployments of the Ju 88 began with the occupation of Norway, from August followed intensified attacks on the British mainland. Structural improvements to the A1 led to a better defensive armament and changes to the wing. The resulting Ju88A-4 was manufactured as the standard Luftwaffe bomber on a large scale and was the basis for all further developments of the Ju 88 as a bomber, destroyer and reconnaissance. The A-4 series is one of the most produced versions. Compared to their predecessors, she was armored extensive to protect the crew, had a more powerful engine and a greater defensive armament. Their first major use was the new machine at 51 KG during the invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1942. The Ju88A-4 was used in all theaters of war, and has been continuously improved. In addition to aerodynamic improvements and the possible payload was increased with increasing engine power. So the Ju88A-4 could be equipped with the use of up to 4 SC500 bombs.
