The Convair XC-99 was one of the largest and most ambitious transport aircraft ever built for the United States Air Force.

Developed in the late 1940s, it was designed to demonstrate the potential of a truly massive long-range cargo and troop carrier, capable of supporting global post-war airlift requirements.

Sharing its wings, tail, and six Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines with the B-36 Peacemaker, the XC-99 was powered by the most advanced piston-engine technology of its day.

Its enormous airframe featured a fully pressurised two-deck internal layout, providing exceptional payload capacity — up to 400 fully equipped troops or over 100,000 lbs of cargo — a figure unmatched by any other aircraft of its era.

The XC-99 completed long-distance transport missions across the United States and beyond, proving both its reliability and the viability of large-scale strategic airlift operations.
