The Manshu Ki-79B was a Japanese military training aircraft developed during the later years of the Second World War.
Produced by the Manchurian Aircraft Manufacturing Company (Manshu), it was based on the earlier Tachikawa Ki-55, itself derived from the combat-proven Tachikawa Ki-36.
As Japan’s need for trained pilots increased, simplified and locally manufactured aircraft like the Ki-79B became essential.
The Ki-79B variant was a single-engine, two-seat advanced trainer, designed to prepare pilots for operational combat aircraft.
Compared to earlier versions, it featured a Hitachi Ha-13 radial engine, offering reliable performance suitable for training duties.
The aircraft had a low-wing monoplane layout with fixed landing gear, making it straightforward to operate and maintain—ideal for less experienced pilots progressing through their flight training.
Built in significant numbers in Manchukuo, the Ki-79 series allowed Japan to expand its pilot training programme despite increasing wartime pressures and resource shortages.
While it was not intended for frontline combat, its role was vital in sustaining the flow of trained aircrew during a critical period of the war.
Today, the Manshu Ki-79B is remembered as a practical and efficient training aircraft, reflecting Japan’s efforts to adapt its aviation production under wartime constraints while maintaining pilot readiness.
