The Avia B-534/III was one of the principal production variants of Czechoslovakia’s highly regarded B-534 biplane fighter series.
Introduced in the mid-1930s, the Series III represented a refined and combat-ready development of earlier models, combining excellent manoeuvrability with strong firepower.
Designed and built by Avia, the B-534/III was powered by the Hispano-Suiza 12Y liquid-cooled V12 engine, enabling the aircraft to reach speeds of approximately 250 mph (400 km/h).
For a biplane, this was exceptional performance, making it one of the fastest and most agile fighters of its type anywhere in the world at the time.
The Series III variant featured an enclosed cockpit and was armed with four 7.92 mm machine guns mounted in the fuselage, giving it considerable offensive capability for the mid-1930s.
Its clean lines, streamlined spatted undercarriage, and balanced handling made it popular with pilots and respected by foreign observers.
The Avia B-534 formed the backbone of the Czechoslovak Air Force prior to the German occupation in 1939.
Following the annexation of Czechoslovakia, surviving aircraft were taken over by the Luftwaffe for training duties, while others were operated by the Slovak Air Force and saw limited combat service during the early years of the Second World War.
Although soon eclipsed by more modern monoplane fighters, the Avia B-534/III stands as one of the finest biplane fighters ever built.
It represents the pinnacle of biplane fighter design — fast, elegant, and heavily armed — at the very moment aviation was transitioning into the monoplane era.
