The Avia B-534/IV Late Version represented the final major production variant of Czechoslovakia’s famous B-534 fighter series and marked the ultimate refinement of one of the world’s most advanced biplane fighters.
Entering service in the late 1930s, the Series IV incorporated aerodynamic improvements over earlier versions, including a fully enclosed cockpit, revised canopy framing, and a cleaner engine cowling.
These refinements enhanced pilot protection and overall performance, while maintaining the aircraft’s excellent handling characteristics.
Powered by the Hispano-Suiza 12Ydrs liquid-cooled V12 engine, the B-534/IV achieved speeds of approximately 250 mph (400 km/h), exceptional for a biplane fighter.
Its agility, tight turning circle, and responsive controls made it highly effective in dogfights, especially at lower altitudes.
Armament typically consisted of four 7.92 mm machine guns mounted in the fuselage, giving it solid firepower for its era.
While the Bk-534 variant introduced a 20 mm cannon, the Series IV remained primarily machine-gun armed but benefited from improved reliability and refinement.
The Avia B-534 formed the backbone of the Czechoslovak Air Force prior to the German occupation in 1939.
Following annexation, aircraft were absorbed into German service for training roles, while others served with the Slovak Air Force and saw limited operational use during the early stages of the Second World War.
Although soon outclassed by modern monoplane fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Avia B-534/IV Late Version stands as one of the finest and most elegant biplane fighters ever produced — a true symbol of the closing chapter of the biplane era just before air combat was transformed forever.
