The Bell XFL-1 Airabonita was an experimental carrier-based fighter developed for the United States Navy in the late 1930s.

Designed by Bell Aircraft as a naval adaptation of the company's P-39 Airacobra fighter, the XFL-1 featured several unique design elements intended to meet the Navy’s requirements for shipboard operations.

Like the P-39, the Airabonita used an unusual mid-mounted engine layout, with the Allison V-1710 engine positioned behind the pilot and driving the propeller through a long extension shaft.

This configuration allowed space in the aircraft’s nose for heavy armament, including a 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub, along with additional machine guns.

To make the aircraft suitable for carrier operations, the XFL-1 incorporated features such as a strengthened undercarriage, arrestor hook, and naval equipment.

However, despite its advanced design, the aircraft suffered from stability and handling issues during testing.

Only a single prototype was built, and the project was ultimately cancelled as the Navy pursued other fighter designs better suited to carrier service.

Although it never entered production, the Bell XFL-1 Airabonita remains an interesting and unusual aircraft from the early years of World War II aviation development.

This model represents the prototype naval fighter that combined the innovative design of the Airacobra with the unique requirements of carrier aviation, making it a fascinating subject for modellers interested in experimental aircraft and early WWII aviation projects.
