RS Models 1/72 Dewoitine D-520 # 92255
The Dewoitine D.520 was one of France’s most capable and modern fighter aircraft at the outbreak of the Second World War.
Designed by Émile Dewoitine and entering service in early 1940, it represented a significant leap forward for the Armée de l’Air, combining speed, manoeuvrability, and heavy armament in a sleek, low-wing monoplane design.
Powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Y liquid-cooled V12 engine, the D.520 could reach speeds of approximately 330 mph (530 km/h), placing it on par with contemporary fighters such as the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E.
Unlike many earlier French fighters, it featured an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear, and a streamlined fuselage that gave it both performance and elegance in the air.
Armament typically consisted of a 20 mm Hispano-Suiza cannon firing through the propeller hub, supported by four 7.5 mm MAC machine guns mounted in the wings.
This combination gave the D.520 formidable firepower for its time, capable of challenging German fighters during the Battle of France in 1940.
Although introduced too late and in insufficient numbers to alter the course of the campaign, the D.520 proved highly effective in combat.
French pilots flying the type achieved notable success against both German and Italian aircraft.
After the armistice, the aircraft continued service under Vichy French forces and later with the Free French Air Force. Some examples were even operated by Axis-aligned forces and post-war air arms.
Today, the Dewoitine D.520 stands as a symbol of French aviation resilience during one of the nation’s most turbulent periods.
With its distinctive lines and balanced performance, it remains one of the most respected French fighters of the early war years — a testament to the skill and determination of France’s aeronautical engineers and pilots.
