The Dewoitine D.520 was France’s most capable frontline fighter at the outbreak of the Second World War and one of the finest French combat aircraft of the 1940 campaign.
Designed by Émile Dewoitine, it entered service in early 1940 and represented a major technological step forward for the Armée de l’Air.
Powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Y liquid-cooled V12 engine, the D.520 could reach speeds of approximately 330 mph (530 km/h), placing it broadly on par with the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E it faced during the Battle of France.
Its low-wing monoplane layout, retractable undercarriage, and enclosed cockpit gave it a modern appearance and performance profile compared to many earlier French fighters.
Armament consisted of a powerful 20 mm Hispano-Suiza cannon firing through the propeller hub, supported by four 7.5 mm MAC machine guns in the wings.
This combination gave the aircraft a strong punch, capable of damaging bombers and engaging enemy fighters effectively.
Although introduced too late and in insufficient numbers to change the outcome of the 1940 campaign, the D.520 proved highly competitive in combat.
French pilots flying the type achieved notable success against German and Italian aircraft.
After the armistice, it continued in service with Vichy French forces, later being used by Free French units and several other air arms during and after the war.
Today, the Dewoitine D.520 is remembered as a symbol of French aviation determination during a critical moment in history — a sleek, well-balanced fighter that demonstrated France’s ability to produce world-class combat aircraft on the eve of modern aerial warfare.
