The Kontakt-1 Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) is a type of protective armor used on Russian armored vehicles.
ERA is designed to enhance the protection of armored vehicles by detonating upon the impact of incoming projectiles, disrupting and defeating them before they can penetrate the main armor.
The Kontakt-1 ERA is one of the earlier generations of ERA used by the Russian military.
Brick Configuration: Kontakt-1 ERA is composed of modular blocks or "bricks" that are attached to the external surface of armored vehicles. These bricks contain explosive elements.
Explosive Elements: Each brick consists of layers of explosive material separated by metal plates. Upon impact from a projectile, the explosive material detonates, causing the metal plates to move rapidly and disrupt the incoming threat.
Protection Against Shaped Charges: ERA is particularly effective against shaped charge projectiles, such as those fired by anti-tank rockets and missiles. The explosive force disrupts the formation of the shaped charge jet, reducing its effectiveness in penetrating the vehicle's main armor.
Deployment: Kontakt-1 ERA has been used on various Russian armored vehicles, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. It was deployed during the late Cold War era and was succeeded by more advanced ERA systems in subsequent years.
Successive Generations: Kontakt-1 is one of the earlier generations of Russian ERA. Subsequent generations, such as Kontakt-5 and Relikt, have been developed to provide improved protection against a wider range of threats.
