The Volkswagen Type 87, also known as the "Kommandeurwagen," is a unique and historically significant vehicle produced during World War II by Volkswagen for the German military.
Based on the iconic Volkswagen Beetle chassis, the Type 87 was specifically designed for military purposes, serving primarily as a staff car and command vehicle for high-ranking officers.
Built between 1941 and 1944, the Type 87 featured a robust construction and a simplified, utilitarian design suited for military operations.
It was powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, similar to the Beetle, providing reliable performance and ease of maintenance in various terrain and weather conditions.
The Type 87's interior was modified to accommodate military equipment and communications devices, with seating for the driver and multiple passengers in the rear compartment.
