The T-80 is one of the Soviet Union’s most advanced Cold War main battle tanks, first entering service in the late 1970s.
Designed as an evolution of the T-64 and T-72 series, it was the first production tank in the world to be powered by a gas turbine engine, giving it exceptional acceleration, speed, and smooth operation compared to conventional diesel-powered designs.
Armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing a wide range of ammunition types—including APFSDS, HEAT, and ATGMs (anti-tank guided missiles)—the T-80 combines formidable firepower with a compact, low-profile design.
Its composite armour and explosive reactive armour (ERA) provide strong protection against modern threats, while its advanced fire-control systems enable accurate targeting on the move.
The T-80 served as a key component of Soviet and later Russian armoured forces throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with several upgraded variants such as the T-80U, T-80BV, and T-80BVM still in service today.
Known for its agility and powerful engine sound, the T-80 remains an iconic symbol of late-Soviet tank engineering—fast, lethal, and technologically ambitious.
