The Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf. D was the standard armoured personnel carrier of the German Wehrmacht during the latter half of the Second World War.
Designed to transport infantry safely alongside tanks, it became a key component of Germany’s Panzergrenadier doctrine, enabling mechanised troops to keep pace with armoured formations while offering protection from small-arms fire and shell splinters.
The Ausf. D was the final and most simplified production version of the Sd.Kfz. 251 series.
Introduced in 1943, it featured a redesigned hull with fewer angled plates and simplified construction, allowing faster, more economical mass production without compromising battlefield effectiveness.
The 251/1 variant served as a troop carrier, typically armed with one or two MG34 or MG42 machine guns for defensive fire.
Powered by a Maybach engine and using a half-track suspension, the Sd.Kfz. 251 combined good cross-country mobility with reasonable road performance, making it well suited to the varied terrain encountered on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
The Ausf. D saw extensive service in all major theatres of war until Germany’s surrender in 1945.
