The Stuka zu Fuß was a field-expedient yet devastating rocket artillery variant of the German Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf. D, developed during the latter years of the Second World War.
Officially designated 15 cm Nebelwerfer 41 auf Schützenpanzerwagen, it earned the nickname “Stuka zu Fuß” (“Stuka on foot”) due to the terrifying sound and psychological impact of its rocket barrages.
This late-production Ausf. D configuration carried six large 15 cm rocket launch frames mounted along the sides of the half-track hull.
The rockets could deliver high-explosive or smoke warheads, providing mobile close-support fire for infantry and armoured units.
Once fired, the vehicle would typically withdraw to reload, as the launch frames left it vulnerable and visually conspicuous.
Based on the simplified Ausf. D hull introduced in 1943, late-production vehicles featured reduced armour complexity and streamlined construction, reflecting Germany’s need for rapid and economical manufacturing under wartime pressure.
The Stuka zu Fuß saw extensive service on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, particularly in urban fighting and defensive operations where its heavy rockets were highly effective.
A striking subject for late-war German armour modellers, the Stuka zu Fuß Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf. D combines the familiar silhouette of the 251 half-track with dramatic rocket weaponry, making it ideal for dioramas depicting infantry support, street fighting, or rear-area rocket deployments.
