The Dora railway gun, officially known as the "Schwerer Gustav," was a massive artillery piece developed by Nazi Germany during World War II.
Named after Adolf Hitler's friend Gustav Krupp, the gun was one of the largest ever built, with a caliber of 800 mm (31.5 inches).
The Dora railway gun was designed to be mobile, mounted on specially constructed railway tracks.
Built by the Krupp company, the Schwerer Gustav was intended for use in siege warfare, particularly against the heavily fortified Soviet city of Sevastopol.
It saw action on the Eastern Front during the Siege of Sevastopol in 1942.
The gun had an impressive range, capable of firing shells over 47 kilometers (29 miles).
Due to its immense size and weight, it required significant logistical support to be transported and operated.
The Dora railway gun represented a symbol of the technological extremes reached during World War II and showcased the lengths to which military engineers were willing to go in the pursuit of strategic advantages on the battlefield.
Despite its formidable capabilities, the Schwerer Gustav had limited use during the war, and only one unit was produced.
After the war, the gun was dismantled by the Soviets, and some of its components are on display in various museums around the world.
