Sova-M 1/72 CIM-10A "Bomarc" Surface-to-Air Missile System # 72060
The CIM-10A "Bomarc" was a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the United States during the Cold War era.
The missile system, officially designated as CIM-10A, was designed to intercept and destroy high-altitude enemy aircraft, particularly strategic bombers.
Here are key features and details about the CIM-10A Bomarc system:
Development and Purpose: The Bomarc missile system was developed in the late 1950s and was intended to provide long-range defense against potential Soviet bomber attacks. It represented a significant component of the United States' air defense strategy during the Cold War.
Two-Stage Missile: The CIM-10A Bomarc was a two-stage missile system. It consisted of a booster stage for initial acceleration and a sustainer stage that carried the missile to its target at high altitudes. This design allowed the missile to reach extremely high speeds.
Nuclear Warhead Option: One distinctive feature of the Bomarc was its capability to carry a nuclear warhead. While later versions of the missile (B and C models) were equipped with conventional high-explosive warheads, the initial CIM-10A could be armed with a W40 nuclear warhead.
Guidance System: The Bomarc was guided by an advanced radar system and an onboard semi-active radar homing guidance system. The missile could be guided by ground-based radar until the final stages of its flight when it switched to its own radar for terminal homing.
Deployment: The CIM-10A Bomarc was deployed at various sites in the United States and Canada, forming an integral part of the North American air defense network. The missiles were housed in semi-hardened underground launch shelters, ready to be launched in response to incoming threats.
Phased Out: The Bomarc missile system faced challenges, including concerns about its high cost and vulnerability to evolving anti-missile technologies. As a result, the CIM-10A Bomarc was gradually phased out of service, with the last missiles decommissioned in the 1970s.
While the CIM-10A Bomarc had a relatively short operational lifespan, it played a significant role in the development of surface-to-air missile technology and contributed to the evolving strategies of air defense during the Cold War.
