Special Hobby 1/72 Dassault Mirage IIIC 'Southern Hemisphere Fighter' # 72534
The Dassault Mirage IIIC was one of the most influential supersonic fighters of the Cold War and played a particularly important role with air forces of the Southern Hemisphere.
As the first production Mirage to achieve sustained Mach 2 performance, the IIIC combined speed, climb rate, and a powerful radar-guided interception capability in a compact delta-wing design.
Powered by the SNECMA Atar turbojet engine, the Mirage IIIC was optimised for high-altitude interception but proved equally capable in air defence and limited ground-attack roles.
Its armament typically included twin 30 mm DEFA cannons supplemented by air-to-air missiles, making it a potent defender of national airspace.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the Mirage IIIC became a cornerstone fighter for air forces such as those of Australia and South Africa, where it served as the primary front-line interceptor during the 1960s and 1970s.
Operating over vast distances and harsh environments, these aircraft were often adapted with local modifications and distinctive camouflage schemes suited to desert, coastal, and southern climates.
The Mirage IIIC’s service south of the equator highlighted its reliability, performance, and adaptability, cementing its reputation as a true global fighter.
Its sharp delta lines, bold national markings, and varied camouflage options make it a standout subject for modellers interested in Cold War aviation beyond the traditional European and North American theatres.

| Short Description | The Mirage IIIC was the first Western European aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight. It became the basis of the Mirage IIIC, IIIE and 5 family of aircraft that still keep flying today. It was a symbol of Israel's superiority in wars with its Arab neighbours. Israeli Mirage IIICs participated in the War over Water, the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War, and many smaller conflicts. Many Israeli pilots became aces in the Mirage IIIC. But of course, the Mirage IIIC was also introduced to the Armee de l'Air's inventory. Another export customer that purchased the Mirage IIIC was South Africa. The SAAF Air Force received 15 examples of this version, and later, other machines were delivered in the IIIE and IIIR versions. In South Africa, Mirage IIICs were used for a long time and were deployed in conflicts with neighbouring countries. Not even the UN embargo prevented this. Argentina also faced an embargo after losing the Falklands War. Therefore, the country purchased nineteen Mirage IIICs from Israel in 1982-83 and used them until 1990. The kit contains seven styrene sprues and one with clear parts. The decals offer three SAAF machines, each in a different colour scheme (two camouflaged and one natural metal finish) and two FAA machines, one in two different camouflages from two different units. - Highly detailed model kit |
