The French Guards Musketeers of the Guard were an elite infantry unit that played a significant role during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The Musketeers of the Guard were part of the Maison du Roi, the royal household troops of the French monarchy.
The War of the Spanish Succession saw France pitted against a coalition known as the Grand Alliance, which consisted of various European powers, including England, Austria, and the Dutch Republic. The conflict arose from the question of who would succeed Charles II of Spain, who died without a direct heir.
