The McDonnell F3H Demon is a carrier-based subsonic swept-wing jet fighter aircraft used by the United States Navy.

The Demon, the successor to the F2H Banshee, was meant to use the Westinghouse J40 engine at first, but had to be rebuilt to accommodate the Allison J71 after the J40 encountered major issues and was eventually abandoned.

Despite its lack of supersonic performance, it served as an all-weather, missile-armed interceptor until 1964, complementing daylight dogfighters like the Vought F8U Crusader and Grumman F11F Tiger.

It and the Crusader were both replaced on Forrestal-class and similar supercarriers by the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II before they could service in Vietnam.

Because it was planned as an improved version of the Demon, McDonnell's Phantom, which was equally capable against ground, fighter, and bomber targets, displays a striking family resemblance.

The supersonic US Air Force F-101 Voodoo had a similar layout to the Demon, but it was derived from the previous XF-88 Voodoo, which affected the Demon's layout as well.
