The Hs 129B-2 and Hs 129B-3 were both specialized Luftwaffe ground-attack aircraft, but they differed mainly in armament and intended battlefield role:
Hs 129B-2:
This was the most widely produced variant, equipped with a 30 mm MK 103 cannon, machine guns, and underwing bombs or rockets.
It was highly effective against soft targets, infantry positions, and light to medium tanks. Its balanced armament and relative availability made it the Luftwaffe's workhorse for ground-attack missions.
Hs 129B-3:
An upgraded and much rarer version, the B-3 carried a massive 75 mm BK 7.5 anti-tank cannon, adapted from the PaK 40 field gun.
This weapon could destroy the heaviest Soviet tanks from a distance but made the aircraft heavier and more difficult to fly.
The B-3 was essentially a flying tank destroyer, built for one purpose: to counter heavily armored threats like the T-34 and IS-2.
While the B-2 was versatile and used widely in frontline support, the B-3 was a specialized variant focused purely on anti-tank operations with unmatched firepower but limited in number and practicality.
