The M24 Chaffee was an American light tank introduced in the later stages of the Second World War and saw active service in the European Theatre from late 1944 onwards.
Designed to replace the earlier M5 Stuart, the Chaffee offered a significant improvement in firepower, protection, and crew comfort while retaining excellent mobility and speed.
Armed with a 75 mm gun derived from aircraft cannon technology, the M24 was capable of engaging German light armour and infantry positions more effectively than previous US light tanks.
In Europe, it was commonly used for reconnaissance, screening, and rapid exploitation roles, where its agility and relatively low silhouette proved especially valuable during the advance into Germany.
Well-liked by its crews for its smooth handling and reliability, the Chaffee continued to serve beyond the Second World War in several conflicts.
Its wartime use in the European Theatre cemented its reputation as one of the most capable light tanks of the era and makes it a popular subject for military historians and scale modellers alike.
