The Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. B Tiger II (Sd.Kfz. 182) with 105 mm gun represents a late-war German development project intended to further enhance the already formidable firepower of the King Tiger.
While the standard Tiger II was armed with the highly effective 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71, German engineers explored fitting a 10.5 cm KwK L/68 gun to counter increasingly heavy Allied armour.
The proposed vehicle retained the Henschel-designed turret, with internal modifications planned to accommodate the larger weapon, revised ammunition stowage, and an improved recoil system.
The 105 mm gun would have offered significantly increased armour penetration and high-explosive effectiveness, but at the cost of reduced ammunition capacity and greater strain on the vehicle’s already overburdened chassis.
Like the production Tiger II, the 105 mm version would have featured extremely heavy frontal armour, sloped glacis plates, and massive overall weight.
Power was to remain the Maybach HL230 engine, which was already at the limits of its capability—one of the main reasons the 105 mm variant never progressed beyond the design and planning stage.
The project was ultimately abandoned as Germany’s industrial situation deteriorated and resources were prioritised for existing vehicles.
Although never built or fielded, the Tiger II 105 mm remains a fascinating example of late-war German armoured ambitions and a popular “what-if” subject for scale modellers, combining the imposing Henschel-turret King Tiger with an even more powerful main gun.
