Trumpeter 1/32 Mikoyan MiG-3 # 02230
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 was a high-altitude interceptor fighter developed by the Soviet Union at the outbreak of the Second World War.
Designed by the newly formed Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau, the MiG-3 represented an evolution of the earlier MiG-1, incorporating improvements in stability, range, and pilot visibility.
Entering service in 1941, the MiG-3 was intended primarily to counter high-flying reconnaissance aircraft and bombers.
At altitudes above 7,000 metres, it was one of the fastest fighters in the world at the time, capable of reaching speeds of approximately 640 km/h (398 mph).
However, much of the air combat on the Eastern Front took place at low to medium altitudes, where the MiG-3’s performance was less competitive compared to aircraft such as the Yak-1 or LaGG-3.
The aircraft was powered by a Mikulin AM-35A V-12 liquid-cooled engine and typically armed with a 12.7 mm UBS heavy machine gun and two 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns.
Later variants experimented with heavier armament, including underwing gun pods and RS-82 rockets, though these additions often reduced overall performance.
Despite its mixed combat reputation, the MiG-3 played an important role during the early months of Operation Barbarossa, defending Soviet cities and key installations.
It was also flown by several notable Soviet aces. Production ceased in late 1941 when priority shifted to engines better suited for ground-attack aircraft like the Il-2.
Today, the MiG-3 remains a fascinating subject for historians and modellers alike, particularly in its winter camouflage schemes and early-war VVS markings.
