HMS York was a heavy cruiser of the British Royal Navy that served during World War II. Here is some information about the ship:

Commissioning and Class: HMS York was a York-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was laid down in 1927, launched in 1928, and commissioned in 1930.

Specifications: The York-class cruisers were armed with eight 8-inch (203 mm) guns in four twin turrets, making them heavily armed for their time. They also had a top speed of 32 knots (59 km/h) and a range of 5,860 nautical miles (10,850 km) at 14 knots (26 km/h).

Service History: During World War II, HMS York saw action in various theaters. She participated in the Norwegian Campaign in 1940 and was involved in the search for the German battleship Bismarck in 1941. In 1942, she took part in Operation Harpoon, a convoy operation to supply the island of Malta.

Mediterranean Theater: One of her most significant engagements occurred in 1941 during the Battle of Cape Spartivento, where she engaged the Italian Navy. During this battle, HMS York was hit by an Italian heavy cruiser, causing damage and casualties.

Later Years: After the war, HMS York underwent various refits and modernizations. She served in the Mediterranean and the Far East before being decommissioned in 1957.

Fate: HMS York was scrapped in 1962.

HMS York, like many other ships of the Royal Navy during World War II, played a vital role in protecting convoys, engaging enemy vessels, and supporting military operations in different theaters of the war.
