Armored trains, armed with heavy artillery and enough protection to endure hard combat, may not be uncommon today, but they served in conflicts spanning from the Civil War to the Cold War and beyond for more than a century.
Long before tanks revolutionised mechanised combat, the idea of a fully armoured, heavily armed, mobile war machine had piqued the interest of war warriors looking for a competitive advantage.
Railways were critical for defence forces since they served as the economic lifeblood of many emerging towns.
Trains were necessary for the transportation of products for trade, but they were also the quickest and most reliable mode of travel for troops, equipment, and supplies in support of any war effort.
As a result, armoured trains played two crucial roles in nineteenth-century conflicts: first, safeguarding railways from attack, and second, delivering massive amounts of artillery to distant battlefields in a very short length of time.
As time passed, new vehicles dominated the battlefield, displacing armoured combat trains in favour of vehicles that weren't reliant on fragile train tracks; however, armoured trains are still used by a few nations today in some form or another.
