The MZ-38 oil-servicing unit was a Soviet support and maintenance apparatus introduced in the late 1930s and used by the Red Army for the servicing of military vehicles and mechanical equipment.
The designation reflects its pre-war Soviet origin, with “38” commonly associated with the year of introduction.
Rather than being a dedicated vehicle, the MZ-38 was a portable oil-servicing system, typically mounted on a small trailer, skid frame, or transportable platform.
It was designed to store and dispense lubricating oils required for routine maintenance tasks such as engine servicing, gearbox lubrication, and general mechanical upkeep.
MZ-38 units were assigned to motor transport, armoured, and maintenance detachments, operating in rear areas, field workshops, and vehicle parks.
Their compact and simple construction reflected Soviet emphasis on rugged, easily maintained support equipment suitable for harsh operating conditions.
Because Soviet documentation on auxiliary equipment is limited and configurations varied, the MZ-38 should be understood as a standardised oil-service system designation, not a single fixed layout.
For modelling and diorama purposes, it is most appropriately depicted in maintenance, refuelling, or workshop scenes supporting Red Army vehicles.
