The M1931 B-4 was one of the most formidable pieces of Soviet heavy artillery during the Second World War, earning the grim nickname “Stalin’s Sledgehammer.”

Introduced in the early 1930s, this massive 203mm howitzer combined immense firepower with rugged tracked carriage mobility, allowing it to be positioned across challenging terrain where wheeled artillery would struggle.

Capable of firing a 100kg (220lb) high-explosive shell to a maximum range of around 18 km (11 miles), the B-4 was designed to demolish fortified enemy positions, bunkers, and urban strongholds.

Its destructive power was vividly demonstrated during the battles for Leningrad, Stalingrad, and later the storming of Berlin, where batteries of B-4s reduced German defences to rubble.

Despite its slow rate of fire and cumbersome transport requirements, the M1931 B-4 proved invaluable in siege operations.

Its tracked mount, derived from a tank chassis, provided stability under recoil and allowed the weapon to be manoeuvred where other heavy guns could not operate.

By the end of the war, the B-4 stood as a symbol of Soviet heavy artillery might—an uncompromising weapon built to deliver overwhelming firepower against the toughest fortifications.

Short Description

The Soviet B-4 high power heavy howitzer with a calibre of 203.2 mm (8 in) was developed in 1931.

The howitzer could fire shells weighing more than 100 kg at a range of almost 18 km.

The weight of the gun was 19 t in transport position.

A special caterpillar carriage was developed - a large tracked bearing surface prevented the howitzer from sinking into the ground, and the strong carriage withstood the powerful recoil when firing.

The first combat use of the B-4 took place during the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-40, when it was used to destroy Finnish concrete fortifications.

The Finns nicknamed the gun "Stalin's Sledgehammer".

The German Army captured a number of these guns and used them under the designation 20,3 cm H.503 (r).

The howitzer was used throughout WWII.
