The Focke-Wulf Fw 190W-1 was an experimental floatplane adaptation of the formidable Fw 190 fighter, developed by Nazi Germany during World War II.
Conceived as a potential naval fighter for operations in regions without established airfields, the W-1 variant was equipped with large twin floats in place of its conventional undercarriage.
Retaining the power and agility of the original Fw 190A series, the W-1 was intended to provide the Luftwaffe with a fast and heavily armed seaplane capable of operating from water-based platforms or coastal zones.
Though aerodynamic performance was affected by the added drag and weight of the floats, the concept showcased the adaptability of the Fw 190 airframe.
Only a prototype of the Fw 190W-1 was built and tested, and the project did not advance to production.
Nevertheless, this rare design represents an intriguing "what-if" in aviation history—a blend of fighter aircraft performance and floatplane versatility.
A unique addition to any model collection, it highlights the innovative (and sometimes desperate) engineering approaches of the late-war years.
