The Leopard 1A5 German Army Main Battle Tank was the final and most advanced upgrade of the original Leopard 1 series developed for the West German Bundeswehr during the Cold War.
Introduced in the 1980s, the Leopard 1A5 was designed to extend the service life of the Leopard 1 fleet while improving its combat effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
The most significant upgrade was the installation of an advanced EMES 18 fire-control system, similar to that used on the Leopard 2, which greatly improved target acquisition and accuracy, especially while on the move.
The tank retained the reliable 105 mm L7A3 main gun, capable of engaging enemy armour at long range, while new thermal imaging equipment allowed for effective night and poor-weather operations.
Additional improvements included enhanced armour protection, upgraded electronics, and improved battlefield survivability systems.
Although lighter than many contemporary main battle tanks, the Leopard 1A5 relied on its excellent mobility, accuracy, and modernised targeting systems to remain an effective combat vehicle.
It served with the German Army and several other NATO forces well into the late 20th century.
