The Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk was an early production version of the P-40 fighter, entering service just before the United States formally joined the Second World War.

Building on the original P-40 design, the “B” variant introduced improved protection, including armour for the pilot and partial protection for the fuel system, making it more survivable in combat.

Powered by the Allison V-1710 engine, the P-40B delivered solid performance at low and medium altitudes, where it proved most effective.

While it lacked the high-altitude capability of some European fighters, it compensated with rugged construction, good diving speed, and the ability to absorb damage—qualities that made it popular with pilots operating in demanding conditions.

Armed with a combination of .50 calibre and .30 calibre machine guns, the Tomahawk offered respectable firepower for its time.

It saw extensive service with Allied air forces, most famously with the American Volunteer Group—the “Flying Tigers”—in China.

There, its distinctive shark-mouth nose art became legendary, symbolising aggressive tactics and success against Japanese aircraft.

Though quickly superseded by later variants with heavier armament and improved performance, the Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk played an important role in the early air war, earning a reputation as a tough, dependable fighter during a critical period of the conflict.
