HMS Illustrious was one of the Royal Navy’s most important and battle-tested aircraft carriers of the Second World War.
Launched in 1939 as the lead ship of the Illustrious-class, she introduced a revolutionary armoured flight deck that set a new standard for carrier survivability.
This innovative design allowed Illustrious to withstand damage that would have crippled more lightly protected carriers, enabling her to remain operational through some of the most intense combat of the war.
Serving across multiple theatres, Illustrious played a decisive role in the Mediterranean, famously spearheading the daring Fleet Air Arm attack on Taranto, which proved that naval air power could cripple battleships inside their own harbour.
Throughout the war she supported convoy operations, strike missions, and amphibious landings, later moving to the Indian Ocean and Pacific where she continued to serve with distinction.
