The Mikoyan MiG-3 was a high-altitude Soviet interceptor developed just before the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War.
This late production "Winter Air Defence" variant features the adaptations made for harsh winter conditions and the urgent demands of defending Soviet skies against the Luftwaffe during the brutal winter campaigns of 1941–42.
Equipped with refined aerodynamics, revised armament placement, and improved engine performance at altitude, the MiG-3 excelled at high-speed interception—especially at altitudes above 7,000 metres.
However, its relatively poor performance at low level made it a challenging aircraft to fly in the close-range dogfights typical of the Eastern Front.
This winterised version was fitted with white camouflage, additional insulation, and cold-weather gear to support air defence units during bitter sub-zero conditions.
Despite its handling quirks, the MiG-3 earned the respect of many Soviet pilots for its speed, altitude advantage, and rugged reliability under freezing conditions.
This model kit faithfully recreates the late-production MiG-3 in its winter camouflage scheme, making it ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of early WWII Soviet aviation.
