Border Model 1/35 Sherman M4A1 Late # 056
The Sherman M4A1 Late represents one of the most refined and combat-proven versions of the iconic American medium tank of the Second World War.
Instantly recognisable by its distinctive fully cast upper hull with rounded contours, the M4A1 combined industrial efficiency with battlefield reliability.
Late-production M4A1 variants commonly featured the more powerful 76mm M1 gun, introduced to improve anti-armour performance against increasingly formidable German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger.
This upgrade significantly enhanced the Sherman’s effectiveness in 1944–45 operations across Northwest Europe.
Powered by the Continental R975 radial engine, the M4A1 delivered dependable performance, good mobility, and ease of maintenance — key factors behind its widespread deployment.
Its vertical volute spring suspension (VVSS), and later horizontal volute spring suspension (HVSS) on some late examples, provided improved ride quality and load-bearing capacity.
The cast hull offered ballistic advantages over welded variants, with its curved surfaces helping deflect incoming rounds.
Additional late-war features often included:
Enlarged turret bustle with loader’s hatch
Wet ammunition stowage (reducing fire risk)
Improved commander’s cupola with vision blocks
Enhanced armour appliqué or factory upgrades
The M4A1 Late saw extensive service with U.S., Free French, British, and other Allied forces from Normandy through the push into Germany.
Its adaptability also allowed it to serve as the basis for numerous specialised variants including flamethrower tanks, recovery vehicles, and self-propelled artillery platforms.
Reliable, versatile, and produced in vast numbers, the Sherman M4A1 Late stands as a symbol of Allied armoured strength — not through sheer armour thickness, but through mobility, firepower, and overwhelming logistical superiority.
