The Nieuport XI "Bébé" Early Version was a lightweight French fighter aircraft introduced in late 1915 during World War I.
It was designed as a response to the growing dominance of German monoplanes during the "Fokker Scourge."
Developed from the Nieuport 10 reconnaissance aircraft, the XI was a dedicated single-seat fighter featuring a sesquiplane design, with a smaller lower wing to reduce drag and improve maneuverability.
The early version of the Nieuport XI was characterized by its lighter airframe, unreinforced wing struts, and basic rigging, which, while providing excellent agility, also made the lower wing susceptible to vibration and structural stress at high speeds.
It was powered by an 80-horsepower Le Rhône 9C rotary engine, giving it a top speed of approximately 156 km/h (97 mph).
Initially, the aircraft was armed with a single Lewis gun mounted above the upper wing to fire over the propeller arc, as it lacked a synchronized machine gun system.
This placement allowed for clear forward firing but required pilots to manually reload the weapon in flight.
The Nieuport XI Early Version saw widespread service among Allied nations, including France, Belgium, Italy, and Russia.
It played a key role in regaining air superiority over the Western Front in early 1916 but was eventually upgraded to address structural weaknesses found during combat operations.
