The Mgebrov-R Armoured Car was a distinctive and heavily modified Russian fighting vehicle developed during the First World War.
Designed by Staff Captain Vladimir Mgebrov, it was based on a Renault commercial chassis but extensively rebuilt to serve on the Eastern Front.
Unlike many early armoured cars that relied on simple flat armour plates, the Mgebrov-R featured carefully angled armour designed to improve ballistic protection — a forward-thinking concept for its time.
Its sharply sloped front and faceted hull gave it an almost futuristic appearance compared to more box-like contemporaries.
Armed with machine guns mounted in a fully enclosed rotating turret, the vehicle provided improved defensive firepower and protection for its crew.
The enclosed design offered better survivability than earlier open-topped armoured cars, which left crews exposed to shrapnel and small-arms fire.
Powered by its Renault engine, the Mgebrov-R was best suited to road operations, as muddy and undeveloped terrain often limited mobility — a common issue for wheeled armoured vehicles of the era.
Nevertheless, it represented a significant step in Russian armoured vehicle development during WWI.
Though produced in limited numbers, the Mgebrov-R stands as an example of early armoured warfare innovation — blending mobility, improved armour geometry, and turreted firepower at a time when armoured vehicle doctrine was still in its infancy.
