The Curtiss P-40E Warhawk was one of the most iconic American fighter aircraft of World War II — a rugged, dependable workhorse that served in nearly every theatre of the conflict.

Introduced in 1941, the P-40E was powered by an Allison V-1710 inline engine, delivering speeds of over 360 mph (580 km/h) and giving it the strength and speed needed for both air superiority and ground-attack missions.

Distinguished by its aggressive shark-mouth nose art — made famous by the Flying Tigers of the American Volunteer Group in China — the P-40E earned a reputation for toughness, precision handling, and resilience under fire.

This variant improved upon earlier versions with six .50 calibre machine guns, enhanced armour protection, and refined aerodynamics.

Though outclassed by some Axis fighters at higher altitudes, the Warhawk excelled in low- and mid-level combat, where its durability and dive speed often gave it the edge.

Pilots praised its reliability and ability to withstand heavy damage — a true testament to Curtiss engineering.
