The D-Day Mustangs P-51B were a group of North American P-51B Mustang fighter aircraft used by Allied forces during the pivotal D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
These aircraft played a crucial role in providing air support and air superiority for the invasion forces as they landed on the beaches of Normandy.
The P-51B Mustang, equipped with its powerful Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, was renowned for its speed, range, and manoeuvrability.
Armed with .50 calibre machine guns, it was a formidable opponent for enemy aircraft and ground targets alike.
The D-Day Mustangs, painted with distinctive invasion stripes for recognition by friendly forces, conducted strafing runs on enemy positions, escorted bombers, and conducted reconnaissance missions to support the Allied advance inland.
Their presence in the skies over Normandy helped to secure air supremacy for the Allies and contributed significantly to the success of the largest amphibious invasion in history, marking a turning point in World War II.
