The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb was a British fighter aircraft variant that played a significant role during World War II, particularly in the Allied invasion of Normandy, known as Operation Overlord, in June 1944.
The Mk.Vb variant was powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine and featured an improved armament of two 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 Browning machine guns, making it highly effective in both dogfights and ground-attack missions.
Its robust design and performance at low to medium altitudes were crucial during the D-Day operations, providing air cover and engaging enemy aircraft to secure the skies for the advancing Allied forces.
The Spitfire Mk.Vb OVERLORD epitomized the resilience and adaptability of the Spitfire series, contributing significantly to the success of the Normandy invasion.
