The Messerschmitt Bf 109K-4 “Kurfürst” was the ultimate production variant of Germany’s legendary Bf 109 fighter series and one of the most formidable piston-engine fighters of the Second World War.
Introduced in late 1944, the K-4 represented the final evolution of a design that had first flown in the mid-1930s.
Powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 605D engine, often equipped with MW 50 methanol-water injection for emergency power boost, the Bf 109K-4 delivered exceptional speed and climb performance.
It could exceed 440 mph (710 km/h) under optimal conditions, making it one of the fastest operational fighters of the war.
The K-4 featured refined aerodynamics compared to earlier G-series variants, including a streamlined cowling, retractable tailwheel, and improved canopy design.
These changes reduced drag and enhanced overall performance while maintaining the compact, high-performance characteristics for which the Bf 109 was known.
Armament typically consisted of a 30 mm MK 108 cannon firing through the propeller hub, supplemented by two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns mounted above the engine.
This heavy firepower made the K-4 particularly effective against Allied bombers, while still retaining strong dogfighting capability.
Entering service during the final months of the war, the Bf 109K-4 saw action on both the Western and Eastern Fronts.
Although introduced too late and in limited numbers to alter Germany’s strategic situation, it demonstrated just how far the original Bf 109 design could be developed.
The “Kurfürst” stands as the pinnacle of Bf 109 development — a sleek, powerful and heavily armed fighter that embodied the technological intensity of late-war aerial combat.
