The Grumman F7F-3 Tigercat was the ultimate development of Grumman’s powerful twin-engine fighter line, designed to give the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps a fast, long-range, heavily armed aircraft capable of excelling in both air-to-air and strike roles.
Entering service just after the Second World War, the Tigercat quickly earned a reputation for its exceptional speed, rugged construction, and devastating firepower.
The F7F-3 variant featured a strengthened airframe, updated systems, and improved handling, making it the most refined version in the series.
Driven by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines, it offered outstanding performance — easily matching or surpassing many of the era’s single-engine fighters.
The aircraft was armed with four 20 mm cannons and four .50 cal machine guns, and it could carry bombs or rockets on underwing pylons, giving it formidable capability in both interception and ground-attack missions.
The F-3K designation was assigned to later Tigercats converted into target tugs, used to support weapons training.
These aircraft often received high-visibility paint schemes, a ventral tow target unit, and other modifications to suit their new role.
Despite no longer serving as frontline fighters, the F-3K conversions extended the Tigercat’s operational life well into the 1950s and beyond.
For modellers, the F7F-3 / F-3K Tigercat offers a bold and striking subject featuring its sleek twin-boom layout, powerful twin-engine stance, and optional night-fighter or target-tug configurations.
It’s a dramatic centrepiece for any Cold War or post-WWII aircraft collection.
