The Grumman F7F-3N Tigercat was one of the most powerful twin-engine fighters ever built for the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
Designed at the end of the Second World War, the Tigercat combined high speed, heavy armament, and long-range capability, making it a formidable interceptor and night-fighter during the early Cold War era.
The F7F-3N was the dedicated night-fighter variant, equipped with a distinctive radar nose housing the APS-6 radar system.
This advanced equipment allowed Marine Corps squadrons to conduct all-weather interceptions and night operations with impressive precision.
Powered by two massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines, the Tigercat delivered blistering performance — easily outpacing many contemporary single-engine fighters.
Armed with a devastating combination of four 20 mm cannons and four .50 cal machine guns, plus rockets or bombs on underwing hardpoints, the F7F-3N could carry out interception, ground-attack, and close-support missions with equal confidence.
Although it arrived too late for WWII combat, the Tigercat saw action during the Korean War, where its speed and firepower proved invaluable, especially in the night-fighter role.
For modellers, the F7F-3N Tigercat offers a striking presence thanks to its sleek twin-boom design, radar-equipped nose, and muscular twin-engine layout.
