During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military relied heavily on rapidly deployable temporary command stations to coordinate operations across dispersed and often remote bases.
These installations formed the nerve centres of forward operating areas, providing essential facilities for command, communications, planning, and intelligence support in a constantly shifting battlefield environment.
Typically constructed from sandbags, timber framing, corrugated metal, and prefabricated components, temporary command stations were designed for speed of assembly rather than permanence.
Interiors often housed map tables, radio equipment, field telephones, message boards, and planning areas, while external defences reflected the ever-present threat of attack.
This type of structure was a common feature of U.S. Army and Marine Corps bases throughout Vietnam, from large fire support bases to smaller forward outposts.
Often surrounded by defensive works such as bunkers, barbed wire, and guard positions, command stations played a critical role in coordinating patrols, air support, artillery fire, and logistics.
