The P‑47D was the definitive version of Republic Aviation’s rugged P‑47 Thunderbolt, the largest‑and‑heaviest single‑engine fighter of World War II and the workhorse of Allied tactical air power.

Origins & Design
Powerplant: one 2,300 hp Pratt & Whitney R‑2800‑59 Double Wasp 18‑cyl. air‑cooled radial with a turbo‑supercharger buried aft of the cockpit and linked by a long duct—giving the “Jug” superb high‑altitude performance.
Airframe: thick elliptical wings, broad fuselage, and a stout tricycle landing gear that could absorb rough forward airstrips.

Variants inside the “D” block:

Razorback (D‑1 to D‑22) with the original high spine.
Bubble‑canopy (D‑25 onward) which replaced the spine with a teardrop canopy, vastly improving rearward visibility for dogfights and ground attack.

Performance (P‑47D)
Max speed 433 mph (697 km/h) at 30,000 ft
Climb to 15,000 ft ~5 min 45 s
Range 800 mi (1,290 km) internal; 1,800 mi (2,900 km) with two drop tanks
Service ceiling ~43,000 ft (13,100 m)

Armament
8 × 0.50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine‑guns (3,400 rpg total)—the heaviest gun battery mounted on any Allied fighter.
External stores: up to 2,500 lb (1,130 kg) of bombs or 10 × 5‑in HVAR rockets, turning the fighter into a formidable fighter‑bomber/close‑air‑support platform.

Combat Record
European Theater: Escorted B‑17 and B‑24 bomber streams deep into the Reich until the longer‑legged P‑51 took over; then excelled in ground‑attack with the Ninth Air Force—destroying trains, tanks, flak batteries, and anything that moved from D‑Day to VE‑Day.
Pacific & CBI: Flew with the Fifth, Seventh, Tenth, and Fourteenth Air Forces, appreciated for its ability to absorb punishment and bring pilots home across vast stretches of ocean or jungle.
Statistics: of the 15,683 Thunderbolts built, ~12,600 were P‑47Ds—more than any other U.S. fighter variant. Jug pilots claimed ~3,750 enemy aircraft in the air and tens of thousands on the ground while maintaining one of the lowest loss‑rates to hostile fire.

Pilot Perspective
Pilots called it “Jug” (short for Juggernaut or its tubby jug‑shaped fuselage).

They respected its:

Durability: self‑sealing tanks, armor plating, and that massive radial engine—many Jugs came home with cylinders shot away or whole control surfaces missing.
Dive speed: heavier but more aerodynamically clean than its contemporaries, a P‑47 could dive past 500 mph and pull out where oppositional fighters flamed out or lost a wing.
Firepower: eight fifties could saw a locomotive in half or shred a Luftwaffe fighter in a single firing pass.

Post‑war Service & Legacy
After 1945 the P‑47D served with Brazil, France, Mexico, Italy, Nationalist China, Iran, Turkey, and Yugoslavia, among others, remaining operational into the late 1950s.

Today a few dozen airworthy examples still thunder across air‑show skies, preserving the roar of the Double Wasp and the legend of the unstoppable Jug.

From high‑altitude escort to low‑level ground‑pounder, the Republic P‑47D Thunderbolt earned a reputation for brute strength, blistering speed in a dive, and an uncanny ability to bring its pilots home—qualities that made it one of the most beloved and effective fighters of World War II.
