The Heinkel He 111H-2/H-3 was a medium bomber employed by the Luftwaffe during the Battle of France and the early stages of the Battle of Britain in 1940.
These variants featured the Jumo 211A-1 or D-1 engines, offering reliable performance and a maximum bomb load of up to 2,000 kg.
The H-2 and H-3 models were equipped with defensive armament, including 7.92 mm MG 15 machine guns, strategically placed to protect against enemy fighters.
On the Western Front in 1940, the He 111H-2/H-3 was a cornerstone of the Luftwaffe's bombing campaigns, targeting Allied airfields, supply depots, and industrial centers.
During the Battle of Britain, these bombers were heavily engaged in raids against British cities and infrastructure as part of the Blitz.
Despite its robust design and versatility, the He 111 faced significant losses due to improved British air defenses and the emergence of the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.
The aircraft’s relatively slow speed and limited defensive armament highlighted its vulnerabilities, yet it remained a key component of the Luftwaffe's bomber force during this period.
