The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, particularly the P-47D variant, was one of the heaviest and most rugged single-engine fighters of the Second World War.

Known affectionately as the “Jug,” it combined immense firepower, durability, and high-altitude performance into a formidable combat aircraft.

Designed by Republic Aviation, the P-47 entered service in 1942 and quickly proved its worth in both air combat and ground-attack roles across the European and Pacific theatres.

Design and Power

The P-47D was built around a massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, giving it exceptional power and performance:

- High top speed, especially at altitude
- Excellent dive capability
- Strong ability to absorb battle damage and still return home

Its large size and weight, once seen as disadvantages, became key strengths in combat survivability.

Firepower and Armament

The Thunderbolt was heavily armed for both air-to-air and ground attack missions:
